In honor of Valentine?s Day and in celebration of love, we are bringing you advice about how to love your job or career.
Classic advice about choosing a career is to ?do what you love,? just because it is the most common advice does not mean that it is the best. You don?t have to do what you love, to love what you do. It may be more important for your long term happiness, more lucrative financially and more practical to love what you do, rather than do what you love.
So, what?s the difference? People are dynamic and complicated with many interests and many passions. Most people like doing many things, often we have one or two things that we really love doing. It might be convenient to get paid for something you are likely to do anyway, but it is not always the best way to earn a living. So perhaps the advice people should give is not to do what you love, which since you love it you are likely to do it anyway, but to love what you do.
The challenge is, how do you find a career or job that you love doing? There are a variety of factors that lead to job satisfaction. Perhaps the central factor is doing something you are good at. We usually enjoy doing things that we are good at. When thinking about your next job or choosing a career you should first consider things you are good at. Even if you are good at it, there is a chance that you may not like doing it, so you should also pick something that you like doing. The other main factor in a satisfying job is the feeling that we are adding something to the world, that what we are doing has value and is important to the organization that we work for.
This is all simple advice and seems obvious:
· Choose something you are good at.
· Choose something you like.
· Make sure you feel that you are making a difference.
But it can be difficult to discover how the things that we like or are good at can be applied to our jobs or careers. One method to finding the interests and strengths that could be useful in a career is to think about the things you like and ask yourself ?Why?? What about these doing these things is interesting for you? Solving a puzzle? Solving a problem? Connecting to another person? Being creative? Often you will find that there is a similar theme (or themes) to the different things that you like doing. That theme can be applied to many different kinds of jobs. Once you find the things you like doing and apply them to a job, you will like the job.
In honor of Valentine?s Day, think about how you can love what you do, no matter what job or career you are looking. And next time someone asks for career advice, forget ?Do what you love? and tell them to ?Love what they do.?
