As a candidate it is up to you to sell yourself to the recruiter! If your email and CV do not make it 100% clear what job you are applying to and why you should be considered for it, you will be immediately passed over.

It is important for you to consider what the recruiter needs and what the job you are applying for needs in order to make the recruiters job as easy as possible.

1.       Do NOT make the recruiter guess what job you are applying for. Recruiters rarely have one position to fill. No recruiter will waste time trying to match your CV to one of their positions.

2.       The Job Description is your best insight into what the recruiter requires. Read the Job Description carefully. Now read it again! Everything in your email, the subject, your text and your CV should answer that job description.

a.        If, for example, the job description says CPA certification is a must, make sure it is very clear that you are a certified CPA.

b.      If, for example, the job description is a sales position but most of your experience is in marketing or product development, highlight how that applies to sales.

Recruiters have a position to fill, they have requirements for that position, it is not their job to fit your skills to their requirements. It is your job to highlight the experience you have that applies to their requirements.

3.       Be concise and clear! I recently gave this advice regarding cover letters, it also applies to your CV, to the subject of the email and to anything else that you ever provide to a recruiter.  Vague or long information will not be read and will give a tired recruiter the perfect reason to skip to the next CV.

4.       Do not assume that experience transfers across industries. If your experience is based in a specific industry, highlight the products, services, accounts, clients or partners you have had in that industry that might apply to the new field. A recruiter will not connect the dots for you.

Everything that you present to a recruiter demonstrates your skills. Every piece of information is part of your application and your audition. A recruiter can tell how well you paid attention to the details of the job description. That reflects on you, how well do you pay attention? Did you write well? Did you spell check? Was your email sloppy or lazy? Did you make the effort to tailor your CV?

The answer to all these questions are in the tiny details of your email and CV. You have a very short window to provide information, both active and passive, to show not only how you fit the position but also how well you can do the job.

Every letter counts. It is your job to put the effort behind each one.
