Don?t Get Lost! Stay on track to get to your next job
I?m always trying to stay on top of scheduling and get things done without too much procrastinating. Today I decided to share a few tips and tricks for time management for the job search.
Looking for a job is a stressful time. It can be easy to get distracted, discouraged and depressed. Whether or not you have a job while you?re looking, time management can be crucial to keeping you on track and getting you the next job.
Create a schedule ? Digital or paper, use a calendar that is comfortable for you. Block out time to work on your resume and cover letters, to apply to jobs and to follow up on leads. Keep track of what jobs you apply for and when. Schedule when to follow up. It is important to give yourself blocks of time to complete job search tasks.
Set goals ? Having something to work towards is crucial. It creates organization and gives you a way to feel some control. Set realistic goals for yourself. Give yourself a deadline and stick to it.
Network - Set aside time for networking, online or in person. Get in touch with old contacts, if it?s a college professor or an old boss, ask them to coffee. Be social and clear about your job search needs. Make new contacts by going to relevant conferences or seminars to meet the right people. Maintain your social networks online and make sure the right people know you are looking for a job.
Volunteer ? Volunteering, especially in a situation relevant to your career, can help you build your network, meet new people, learn new skills or improve skills you already have. It looks good on a resume and it can be something interesting to discuss in an interview. It also shows recruiters you are proactive and keeping yourself relevant.
Freelance ? Job seekers can get tunnel vision about looking for a full time job (and only a full time job). Freelance is another great way to keep yourself relevant, as well as sharpen your skills and talents. It also has the benefit of creating an income. My mother kept herself relevant for ten years by freelancing, sometimes pro bono for non-profit organizations. She was able to go back to work, right where she left off, ten years later!
Exercise ? It does not matter what you do. Go for a twenty minute walk, run around with your kids at the park for half an hour, stretch for fifteen minutes, go to a yoga class or work out at the gym. Exercising brings you tons of energy. It clears your mind. It keeps you healthy and focused.
Don?t get lost during the job search. Make a calendar, stay organized. Schedule job search tasks and keep yourself busy and active. Your next job is just around the corner.
